Read

Hebrews 7:26-28

26He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has now been set apart from sinners, and he has been given the highest place of honor in heaven. 27He does not need to offer sacrifices every day like the other high priests. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he sacrificed himself on the cross. 28Those who were high priests under the law of Moses were limited by human weakness. But after the law was given, God appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made perfect forever.

Reflect

In the Old Testament, whenever animals were sacrificed for the peoples sins, they were killed and cut into pieces and blood was sprinkled on the alter. People of that day knew that their sin cost them something. They had a visual reference of what their sin cost them. And it was only temporary. They had to continue these sacrifices.

Today, many people take Jesus’ death on the cross for granted. They don’t realize the price that he paid on the cross was costly. He endured a painful death. He was temporarily separated from his Father. He gave His life for us once and for all. So that no other sacrifices were needed. Because Jesus was holy and blameless, unstained by sin, His forgiveness is permanent and so is our salvation.

Respond

Why is blood demanded as atonement for sin?

Why were the animal sacrifices not good enough for God in the Old Testament?

Why was Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross sufficient for the atonement of our sins?
