Shine Like A Star - Week 2 - Day 5

Filed under: Daily, Shine Like A Star — David Petersen @ 5:00 am

The Script

29 For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him. 30 We are in this struggle together. You have seen my struggle in the past, and you know that I am still in the midst of it. Philippians 1:29-30

The Plot

Nathan Hale was a lieutenant in the Continental Army. In his early twenties, Hale had worked as a schoolteacher before the Revolution. In late September 1776 he volunteered to cross the British lines and travel to Long Island in order to gather intelligence. Unfortunately, his mission was soon discovered and he was captured by the British, interrogated and executed.

This event in and of itself would not have been a significant event in the American Revolution. It was the dignity in his suffering that immortalized his now famous dying words, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

Like Paul, he was convinced that what he was doing was right. He considered it a privilege to die for his country. Paul considered it a privilege to suffer for Christ.

Suffering has these benefits:

  1. It takes our eyes off earthly comforts.
  2. Weeds out superficial believers.
  3. Strengthens the faith of those who endure.
  4. Serves as an example to others who may follow us.

Walk Through

  1. Paul writes about a struggle. Is the struggle over yet? If not, how are you a part of it?
  2. As a successful missionary, Paul could have justified giving up the struggle. Did he?
  3. What are some way you can stay engaged in the struggle?

Ad Lib

At the Nicene Council, an important church meeting in the 4th century A.D., of the 318 delegates attending, fewer than 12 had not lost an eye or lost a hand or did not limp on a leg lamed by torture for their Christian faith.
