2 Cor: Abundant Joy

Today’s passage is 2 Corinthians 8:1-7. Join us in reading it.

We are beginning in our reading a two chapter section on giving. The churches in Macedonia are presented as a prime example of how to give. Despite their situation, they were filled with abundant joy. That resulted in a generous heart, people willing to give to others. Not only were they willing, but they begged to be involved giving beyond what they could afford.

2 Cor: Sorrowful Repentance

Today’s passage is 2 Corinthians 7:8-13a.  Join us in reading it.

Sinfulness is destructive – it can destroy the one sinning and it can destroy the people around them. There are times when we must confront that sinfulness, which may cause some short term sorrow, but in the end, result in repentance  which leads to salvation for all eternity.

2 Cor: The God Who Encourages

Today’s passage is 2 Corinthians 7:2-7.  Join us in reading it.

In today’s passage, Paul picks up his narrative regarding his travels that he left off in chapter 2:13. He acknowledges that he has had troubles between himself and the Corinthians but they have brought him great joy as well. He was very worried about this relationship, the Corinthian’s spiritual well being as well as Titus’ well being. Not only was he inwardly worried but he was also facing outward opposition in Maccedonia. So until Titus finally was able to give him the report, he had no rest.

2Cor: Who will you serve

Today’s passage is 2 Corinthians 6:11-7:1.  Join us in reading it.

As we saw in yesterday’s study, Paul is concerned that the Corinthian’s lives could be preventing others from hearing the Gospel. Today’s passage points out one of the prime reasons: we appear to be no different from the rest of the world if we join in their activities.

Paul is not telling Christians to segregate themselves totally from the world such as to set up communities where only Christians are permitted or to go into monasteries. Nor is he saying that Christians shouldn’t be married to unbelievers (he actually tells us in 1 Cor 7:12-14 to remain married if the unbeliever is willing). Rather he is concerned with our lifestyle.

2 Cor 7:1 sums up what Paul is trying to say. We are to be holy and not be involved in the sinfulness that the world exudes. As such, our witness will not be overshadowed by our participation in sin. It is all about our lifestyle, a life of holiness versus a life of sinfulness. When we live right, the Gospel is not overshadowed.

Questions:

  1. Ask yourself, “In what way(s) have I teamed up with the world?”
  2. Ask yourself, “In what way(s) can I “work toward complete holiness” (2 Cor 7:1 NLT)?
  3. What is the point that Paul is trying to make with each of these OT quotes?
    1. 6:16 – Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 32:38; Ezekiel 37:27
    2. 6:17 – Isaiah 52:11; Ezekiel 20:34,41
    3. 6:18 – 2Samuel 7:14; 7:8
  4. What is the end result of obedience to God’s word?

2Cor: A Commended Ministry

Today’s passage is 2 Corinthians 6:1-10.  Join us in reading it.

Paul is concerned that the Corinthians are not living up to what God had called them. Tomorrows passage will continue this concern. God’s priority to save the world through us can be adversely affected by our lives. As such, Paul tries to show the Corinthians by his own life how they should live.

2 Cor: Compelled by the Love of Christ

Today’s passage is 2 Corinthians 5:11-21.  Join us in reading it.

Last Sunday’s sermon was based upon this passage. It speaks to us about God’s priority for the world and for us. It shows us that our first priority should be that of God’s. John 3:16 is well known and beloved, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life.” God’s priority, God’s love is for the world that the world might be saved. We are called to have that same priority, and the same love.
