God is love (1 John 4:8).  1 Corinthians 13:4-8a delineates just what that love is, just what God’s ‘DNA’ of love really looks like.  Underlying this study has been a tension between what we, as individuals and a culture think of as love and what God says love is.

DNA: Love Never Fails
A certain medieval monk announced during morning Mass he would be preaching on “The Love of God” that evening. The evening came and the congregation gathered in anticipation of hear about the love of God. The shadows fell and the light ceased to come in through the cathedral windows. In the darkness of the altar, the monk lit a candle and carried it to the crucifix. First, he illumined the crown of thorns pushed viciously into Jesus’ head. Next, the light shown upon the two hands with spikes cruelly driven in them. Finally, the congregation clearly saw in His side the deep stab of the spear illuminated by the candle. In the hush that fell, the monk blew out the candle and left.

DNA: Love Always Perseveres
George Muller was a minister who opened four orphanages over a 35 year period in Bristol England helping over 23,000 children. At the age of 70 he went into missions for 17 years. When he was around 40 and working hard in the orphanages, he felt called to pray for five of his unsaved friends. He set out to pray for them on a regular basis until they accepted Christ.
