A certain medieval monk announced during morning Mass he would be preaching on “The Love of God” that evening. The evening came and the congregation gathered in anticipation of hear about the love of God. The shadows fell and the light ceased to come in through the cathedral windows. In the darkness of the altar, the monk lit a candle and carried it to the crucifix. First, he illumined the crown of thorns pushed viciously into Jesus’ head. Next, the light shown upon the two hands with spikes cruelly driven in them. Finally, the congregation clearly saw in His side the deep stab of the spear illuminated by the candle.
