The founding episode of Jesus’ ministry is His being baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:21-22), which is followed almost immediately by temptation. Everything that follows, not only in this chapter, but in the whole of the New Testament, is based on the outcome of these twin events. Jesus first submits to His Heavenly Father and receives the Holy Spirit through John the Baptist and then is put to the test by the devil to find out if He actually will serve in Spirit and Truth, walking out that submission in concrete obedience. Then and only then does He move out into the actual purpose and ministry He has been called to among the people of this world, culminating on Calvary and the Cross.
