Flash Forward: The Seed in the Weeds – Day 5
Matthew 13:1-23
“Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.” (Mark 4:18-19 NIV)
How often do we find ourselves waking up in the morning after hitting the alarm snooze button 3 times, rushing to get ready for work, choking down something to eat, if at all, spend a long busy day at the ol’ grindstone, coming home and crashing. Before we realize it, another week has gone by, another month, another year. And what have we accomplished?

We have looked at worry and the deceitfulness of wealth as two types of weeds that can grow up in our lives. We worry about everything and accomplish nothing. We try to get as much wealth as possible even though it never seems like it is enough. As we do, we loose sight of Christ and become unfruitful.

“The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.” (Matthew 13:22 NIV)
Weeds are plants that do not produce desired fruit. There are a few plants that are considered weeds by some and crops by others. Dandelions are a common example of this, especially in the South. Those yellow flowers are the bane of the properly groomed lawn but some people find them to make a good side dish.

Weeds in our lives can prevent God’s Word from bearing fruit in us. There are many types of weeds that can be found in our lives. Some seem minor, others major but they all will stop us from maturing in Christ.

In our series we have been looking at the parable of the Sower and the Seed found in Matthew 13:1-23 although maybe the better title of the parable is “The Parable of the Soils” since that is what changes. We are the soil. Our goal is to become the good soil in order that the seed may bear fruit.

Matthew 13:1-23
‘He (Jesus) replied, ‘The knowledge of the secrets of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.’’(13:11)
‘But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.’ (13:16)
The question that leaps to my mind is when I read these verses is ‘What makes the disciples special?’ What sets them apart from the crowds that they have been given the knowledge of the secrets of heaven and not anyone else?
